Picture via IDNB. Some disturbing video from Manchester over here… What’s up London? Bill…
It’s been a funny week here, I guess everyone has seen the pictures. I probably saw more of the pictures than most because I have been working nights this past week, so have had the TV on all through Sunday & Monday night, watching London (and other cities, too) burn.
But it’s important to keep a sense of perspective. I live about 1k from where some of the worst of it took place (Hackney) but I have not seen any looting, mugging or even any broken glass.
It’s not LA 1992 here, it’s more like France 2005; it’s saddening, but not terrifying.
Of course everyone here is seeking to understand & to suggest how to prevent these events from happening again (it seems that the worst is now over – there are literally thousands of cops on the streets, and they are likely to stay there all over this weekend), and the suggestions range from more youth centres, through arming the police (British police do not carry guns), water cannon, tear gas, National Service, hanging etc but the only thing I have read that even remotely scratches the surface is by this remarkable lady, Camila Batmanghelidjh, who runs a charity that works with disadvantage & alienated kids in south London:
Anyway, thanks for the thoughts.
Ride safe, increase the peace
Good to hear all is not that bad, the media, i guess… Be safe! See you out there somewhere…
