gentrification tuesdays…

save_keirin_berlin_

Last week our landlord informed us, that he will increase the rent by 30% and will try to sell the storefront. This will lead to the end of Keirin Berlin. We don’t have rich parents, nor do we have lots of cash on Swiss bank-accounts. Moving is not really an option, as Berlin gets sold to investors and it’s only a matter of time till not only Kreuzberg is the new Brooklyn… When we moved here in 2004, they begged us to take this place and gave us a 50% reduce on the rent. Please share this! And if you have any ideas let us know! We will be working on some projects to not only save the trackbike but to keep the first ever cycle culture cafe going and #savekeirinberlin as this is not America. Gentrification sucks not only on #gentrificationtuesdays Please won’t let Leonard Cohen’s prediction “First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin…” happen and ride your bike everyday, because cycling not only unites… Updates on our Instagram and soon things that make you go hmmmmm….

  3. The first bike cafe in the world and now this? Don’t give up and let the others take over, that stole your idea. Keirin Berlin is the creator of it all and others think they are!!! Good luck! Let me know when the fundraising starts, I will put some money down or buy another bike, even though I do not need another one! Thanks for all those years and this amazing work you guys been doing for over 10 years now! Hello from Warsaw. I bough a Vetta track frame from you, maybe 7 years ago!

  7. an idea from my friend Alec in Budapest…as follows: The community drives business. No one wants to rent a place destined to fail. Show the landlord and prospective tenants that the community will NOT support any business that replaces the bike shop by gathering signatures objecting to the proposed change.

  13. Just wondering why you publish this in english. I’m french but I speak fluently german and I was schocked to notice lately that many people don’t even speak german in shops and bars. Just imagine, as a londoner, you have to order your beer in spanish or chinese because the waiter doesn’t want to learn english.

In Berlin, anglicization and gentrification go together. Many people, especially american and british hispters or yuppies, feel entitled to buy and own this city without giving a shit about its language and culture – Berlin turned to a superficial, globalized place without identity.

  14. Berlin is over I guess, too much of the “tourists/start-up/hipsters” mix. But there are still great cities in Germany, like Hamburg or Leipzig, so perhaps you should move there (:

  15. Thanks for the mostly positive vibes. Of course there are some folks that have too much time to write comments and suggest funny ideas… For those we can only tell you, you should ride your bike more often! We will figure something out, sorry to disappoint some of you, there will be always a KEIRIN cycle culture cafe! Ride safe!!!
